THE NYUMBANI
LOOKBOOK

(2021)

Designed by Tabea Hermas

Muses: Mohamed Mussa, Yasmina Sawadogo, Jana Nijenbandring, Imran Niskala

The NYUMBANI collection is about embedding the theme of multiculturalism in clothing. On one hand, it is about an exploration in the linguistic sense of the title ‘Nyumbani’, a Swahili word meaning ‘home’. On the other hand, it is about a traditional Tanzanian cloth, the Kanga, and its potential as a garment and means of communication in its text and detail.

The light colors serve as a reminder of the origin of the kanga: the merikani. It is a nod to a history of those who, by printing the textiles, created a place for themselves and others. In the NYUMBANI collection process, fabrics made of cotton or natural fibers were preferred. You find elements inspired by both the kanga and the suit, with shapes and silhouettes created by draping and combining the jacket form.
